MetaTrader 5 prop firms: common questions

What is MetaTrader 5?

MetaQuotes' multi-asset trading platform and the successor to MetaTrader 4. It runs on desktop, web and mobile, and its automation language is MQL5, so expert advisors and indicators written for MT5 run on any firm's MT5 account.

Why do some prop firms no longer offer MetaTrader?

In 2024 MetaQuotes tightened how prop firms could access MetaTrader, and a number of firms - US-facing ones in particular - moved to or added other platforms such as cTrader, Match-Trader, TradeLocker and DXtrade. A firm listed here offers MT5 today; check the platform list on its page before you buy, since it can change.

Can I run expert advisors on an MT5 challenge?

The platform can; whether the firm allows it is a separate question. Many firms permit EAs but ban specific strategies such as high-frequency trading, tick scalping or copying trades between accounts. The rules for automation are listed on each challenge's trading rules.

Does choosing MT5 change the challenge rules?

Usually not. The profit target, drawdown and payout rules belong to the programme, and the platform is chosen at checkout. A few firms price or restrict platforms differently, so compare the challenge page rather than assuming.
