Forex prop firms: common questions

What actually differs between forex prop firms?

Less than the marketing suggests on profit split, and far more than it suggests on the rules. Nearly everyone advertises 80–90%, so the split rarely decides anything. What decides it is whether the drawdown is static or trailing, whether a consistency rule caps how much of your profit can come from one day, how many days you must trade, and whether you can hold through news. Those sit in each challenge's rules tab, and they are what most failed evaluations come down to.

Why do forex prop firms use so many different platforms now?

Because MetaQuotes tightened access to MetaTrader 4 and 5 for prop firms in 2024. Firms moved to Match-Trader, cTrader, DXtrade and TradeLocker, which is why platform is suddenly something to check rather than assume. It matters most if you trade automated strategies: an expert advisor written for MetaTrader does not move to another platform.

Are forex prop firms regulated?

Usually not, and that is expected rather than alarming. On an evaluation account you trade the firm's own or simulated capital, not client money, so the activity generally falls outside investment-firm regulation. Some firms have a licensed broker entity elsewhere in the group — that licence covers the broker, not the evaluation programme.

How much does a forex challenge cost?

The table above shows the cheapest evaluation each firm currently sells, and the price scales with the account size it funds. Two things are worth reading alongside it: whether the fee is refunded on your first payout, and what a reset costs if you breach — a cheap entry with an expensive reset is not cheap if you need two attempts.
